How long have you been doing keto?
2.5 years

What motivated you to start keto?
Cancer

What benefits/successes have you experienced?
After 2.5 years of a Keto therapeutic diet and Tamoxifen/Megace, my metastatic endometrial cancer in my lung and soft tissue and lymph node have resolved!

What was the hardest part?
I was already on a Mediterranean diet so the transition to plant based keto was no problem but I recently went to a ketovore diet (to improve my protein intake, iron and immunity) and went from 20 carbs per day to almost zero and now 3 weeks in, I still have diarrhea but plenty of energy. I am told the diarrhea will stop soon.

What were the keys or top tools to your success?
A purpose and goal, my lovely supportive husband, and seeing my 4 beautiful grandchildren grow up.

Did you measure your ketones and/or glucose and if so, how did that help you?
Yes, at least a couple times per day. I am staying in the GKI (Glucose Ketone Index) zone of 1 to 2 now.

What tips or words of wisdom can you share?
Stick in there if you’re just starting out. I have never felt better in my life!

Drawing on decades of research, Harvard psychiatrist Dr. Chris Palmer outlines a revolutionary new understanding that for the first time unites our existing knowledge about mental illness within a single framework: Mental disorders are metabolic disorders of the brain.

In Dr. Palmer’s first book, Brain Energy explains this new understanding of mental illness in detail, from symptoms and risk factors to what is happening in brain cells. Palmer also sheds light on the new treatment pathways this theory opens up—which apply to all mental disorders, including anxiety, depression, ADHD, alcoholism, eating disorders, bipolar disorder, autism, and schizophrenia. Brain Energy pairs cutting-edge science with practical advice and strategies to help people reclaim their mental health.

This groundbreaking book reveals how to use food as medicine for the brain and how specific types of diets and adjustments to carbohydrate intake can be used to improve mental health.

Brain Energy will transform the field of mental health, and the lives of countless people around the world.

How long have you been doing keto?
March 2023

What motivated you to start keto?
My A1c was 7.2 in spite of taking medication at age 76.

What benefits/successes have you experienced?
I lost about 30 pounds, my A1c is down from 7.2 to 5.8, and I’m taking less medication.

What was the hardest part?
Getting started and eating out with friends and family.

What were the keys or top tools to your success?
After a couple of weeks on keto, my cravings and my appetite were greatly reduced.

Did you measure your ketones and/or glucose and if so, how did that help you?
I got my meter in March and started checking blood glucose and ketones 1 or 2 times daily. It was great for motivation and affirmation.

What’s your favorite keto recipe? Please provide a link if available.
Salmon Piccata on a bed of spinach at Villa Palma in Indialantic Florida.

What tips or words of wisdom can you share?
The most important step is a positive mindset and just getting started. Make up your mind to give it your best shot for 2 weeks. At that point you will see the benefits.

Written by Dr. Paul Kolozdik, an emergency medicine physician with extensive experience in treating metabolic diseases, this book is a comprehensive guide to the clinical use of continuous glucose monitors (CGMs), a powerful tool in modern medicine. The book explains how continuous glucose monitoring is a technology that can improve metabolic syndrome symptoms and overall long-term health by emphasizing the importance of managing blood glucose levels.

The Keto-Mojo principle of “you cannot manage what you do not measure” is highlighted in the book, emphasizing the importance of using CGMs for improved metabolic health. He reviews the basics of getting started with a CGM, how to interpret the numbers, and diet treatment options to improve blood sugar trends.

In addition, Dr. Paul reviews the benefits of blood ketone testing with a Keto-Mojo blood ketone meter in conjunction with blood glucose levels from a CGM to assess nutritional ketosis. Dr. Paul quotes “Ketones can be measured to assess when you arrive in ketosis and if you are staying there.” He also emphasizes the benefits of remote patient monitoring using the MyMojoHealth platform to review trends of blood glucose and ketone data together.

The Continuous Glucose Monitor Revolution provides a simple and effective plan for those looking to reverse prediabetes, lower blood pressure or cholesterol, reduce medication needs, or lose weight. The content in this book underscores the significance of comprehensive CGM data and highlights how leveraging this blood glucose information can lead to achieving optimal weight and overall health goals. It is a valuable resource for anyone wanting to enhance their health and address metabolic illnesses through understanding the body’s blood glucose levels and learning to improve those numbers with low carbohydrate diet options and exercise.

Nikki Kulovitz with her husband and daughterHow long have you been doing keto?
My daughter has been doing keto for 5 months.

What motivated you to start keto?
Our daughter Abigail was born at 34 weeks gestation due to an onset of Preeclampsia and HELLP Syndrome in a rural area of Utah. She was born at 4lbs 4oz, but could not keep her body temperature up, or intake enough food. We were in the hospital for the next two days and then sent home. Abby only weighed 3lbs 11oz and we did not feel it was right to be sent home, but the hospital was cold and we had better control of the environment at home so we did not contest the decision.

Over the next few months, we noticed she was a very quiet baby and did not put up too much of a fuss. Now we understand this was caused by her lack of energy. She was continuously behind milestones but would eventually catch up around the 24-month mark.

Around Abby’s 1st birthday, we made a move to South Carolina for a new job opportunity. Finding a new pediatrician was a top priority since we were still worried about how far behind she was on milestones even though we were reassured that it was most likely due to being premature. When Abby was 16 months old the pediatrician informed us about an early intervention program that South Carolina offers, we were on the waitlist until August. The different therapies offered helped Abby, but only so much with little improvement. In November 2022 the program offered genetic testing. At the appointment, the geneticist told us that Abby was not displaying any defects and they did not think there was a genetic explanation for her growth delays. We were told again that it was likely from being premature.

In December of 2022, we made another move for work and went to Mississippi where we finally got the results back from the genetic testing. It was briefly explained that Abigail has PDCD (Pyruvate Dehydrogenase Complex Deficiency). PDCD is a genetic condition in which the body can’t process carbohydrates. PDCD causes a buildup of lactic acid, seizures, developmental delays, hypotonia, and is life-threatening. 90% of children with PDCD die before the age of 4. We heard this news on a Friday afternoon, with no additional information given for almost a week. We panic-researched the disease and had very low hope with the information that was out there. Over the next few months, we fought to get her seen by doctors trying to explain the severity.

A few weeks later, Abby started on her journey with the ketogenic diet, which showed almost immediate results. She was learning new sounds, motions, and overall growing in size.

Health care has been an overall struggle due to the lack of information regarding this condition. It seems like we are having to advocate every visit for the complexity and severity of what is normally completely fine for “normal” children. To this day we are still fine-tuning Abby’s nutrition, which has become more of a medicine than food.

We check her blood sugar and ketones every other day. She does the best when she is 2.6 or higher. She is allowed 25 carbs a day and that is ever-changing depending on what her lab work shows. To us the keto diet isn’t a fad or diet, it is the only thing that will slow the progression of PDCD down to possibly extend the life of our sweet little girl. She is in daily therapies for speech, physical, and occupational.

She continues to brighten our world with her optimistic personality, you’ll never catch her without a smile even on the worst days. She is determined and intelligent and pushes through daily even though her body is failing her. Currently, there is no cure or standard treatment for this progressive illness, but hopefully one day there will be thanks to the Hope for PDCD Foundation and all of its supporters.

What benefits/successes have you experienced?
We’ve seen significant developmental improvements in my daughter.

What was the hardest part?
Getting a 2-year-old to eat keto foods.

What were the keys or top tools to your success?
We’ve been using a Keto-Mojo meter to monitor her glucose and ketones.

Did you measure your ketones and/or glucose and if so, how did that help you?
Yes, as noted above, it’s essential.

What’s your favorite keto recipe? Please provide a link if available.
Not necessarily a recipe but my daughter’s favorite keto product is Sugar-Free Marshmallows by ChocZero

Exciting findings have emerged from the MHERO trial: The trial aimed to compare the effectiveness of a VLC (Very Low Carbohydrate, also known as ketogenic) diet and a DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet in addressing hypertension, prediabetes, or type 2 diabetes, as well as overweight or obesity in adults.

The DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet is a well-known eating plan designed to help lower blood pressure and promote overall heart health. It is recommended by the American Heart Association (AHA) as the best dietary approach for lowering blood pressure. It emphasizes consuming foods that are low in sodium and saturated fats while being rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and low-fat dairy products.

In many ways, the DASH diet is the opposite of a VLC (ketogenic) diet, which aims to normalize insulin levels and improve insulin sensitivity by emphasizing nutrient-dense foods that are low in sugar and starch, high in natural fats, and adequate in protein. And this is what makes the MHERO trial so interesting: the head-to-head of two very different dietary approaches.

In total, 94 participants were randomly assigned to either the VLC or DASH diet groups. Over a period of 4 months, these individuals actively engaged in an online program that provided them with text messages, cookbooks, coaching, and self-monitoring tools.

The results were striking.

The MHERO trial revealed that the VLC diet exhibited significantly greater improvements in blood pressure, glycemic control, and weight management compared to the DASH diet.

  • VLC resulted in a remarkable decrease in blood pressure (SBP): −9.77 mm Hg versus -5.18 mm Hg for DASH.
  • HbA1C levels also showed a greater reduction: −0.35% for VLC versus −0.14% for DASH.
  • Additionally, VLC led to substantial weight reduction: −19.14 lb / -8.68 kg compared to −10.34 lb / 4.69 kg for DASH.

Of particular importance, the VLC diet led to a higher reduction in medication use among participants.

  • Out of 32 VLC participants using blood pressure medication, 12 were able to discontinue or decrease it, compared to 4 out of 42 on DASH.
  • Similarly, out of 9 VLC participants using blood glucose medication, 5 were able to discontinue or decrease it, while none of the 16 DASH participants achieved this outcome!

These findings highlight the potential benefits of the VLC/ketogenic diet in managing high-risk conditions and reducing reliance on medications. While the MHERO trial sets a strong foundation, larger-scale studies are needed to confirm these results. Nonetheless, these outcomes provide valuable insights for health research.

Following a Mediterranean-based ketogenic diet may decrease the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, according to a new study from scientists at Wake Forest University School of Medicine.

In the study, researchers compared a low-fat diet with a diet consisting of healthy fats/protein and low carbohydrates—the modified Mediterranean ketogenetic diet—and found that the modified diet showed robust changes in a biological pathway that is linked to Alzheimer’s disease.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, more than 6.5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease, and 1 in 3 seniors die with the disease or another form of dementia.

“We hope that better understanding this complex relationship between diet, cognitive status and gut health will lead to new interventions to prevent and treat Alzheimer’s disease,” said Suzanne Craft, Ph.D., professor of gerontology and geriatric medicine at Wake Forest University School of Medicine.

Before and After photo of Eileen Maxey's Keto Success StoryHow long have you been doing keto?

Since the beginning of December 2022

What motivated you to start keto?

I went on a trip to Hawaii with my ex-boyfriend and best friend. I was 50 pounds overweight. He proceeded to hit on my best friend in front of me the entire time. I decided then and there that I never want to be fat or speak to him ever again!

What benefits/successes have you experienced?

I have lost over 40 pounds since December, starting with intermittent fasting then working my way to OMAD and several 24, 48, 72-hour fasts. I LOVE the fasting lifestyle and could not have succeeded without Dr. Mindy Pelz.

What was the hardest part?

Having gone through menopause, as well as having some thyroid issues, I have had to do several extended fasts to break through my weight loss stalls. Currently, I have about 10 pounds to go and have stalled even while fasting. I am now using the recommended supplements for my liver and heavy metal detoxing, plus probiotics to reset my gut health.

What were the keys or top tools to your success?

Dr. Paltz talks a lot about the “Why”. As big a motivator as the weight loss is, curing my addiction to processed flour and sugars as well as alcohol has changed my life. I also took a lot of time to build up to the longer fasts. I love doing my lemon water and Apple Cider Vinegar waters – my new cocktail during my fasts. If I am struggling with just the water, that will usually get me past the 24-hour marker. I also make a plan- how long am I going to fast as well as doing Dr. Pelz’s 4-step process to break the fast so I don’t binge and get a tummy ache which has happened to me before. So I plan to have a hot liquid, as I only eat fish, so I make a nice Miso or chai tea. Then I will eat a little sauerkraut for my probiotics. Then as I am not a huge fan of avocado for the fat- I usually have a big salad with avocado or EVOO. Then possibly a little protein if I am still hungry.

Did you measure your ketones and/or glucose and if so, how did that help you?

I used the sticks and actually was getting worried I had too many ketones. I am still trying to figure that out. I think I may get the meter from you all.

What’s your favorite keto recipe? Please provide a link if available.

    • My favorite meal is poached salmon with a micro green salad with dandelion or kale greens- toasted pumpkin seeds and favorite nut, cucumbers, red onion, and feta. I make a lemon thyme dressing with it. Sometimes I’ll add a little parmesan or Dijon mustard to the dressing.
    • I also make this wonderful bread of just seeds and nuts. It is great to freeze and make toast with. I omit the oats and add a bit more psyllium, pumpkin seeds, and ground almonds.
      https://food52.com/recipes/28886-my-new-roots-life-changing-loaf-of-bread
    • I also do the all-seed crackers.
    • My chia coconut puddings – vanilla and chocolate. Nut and seed granola
    • Lots of frittatas with broccoli or spinach and cheese.
    • A lot of Indian and Thai curries as well.

What tips or words of wisdom can you share?

I have been struggling for the past several years to lose the weight I have gained from menopause. Intermittent fasting and Keto have been the keys to reestablishing my health and well-being. I also watch Dr. Pelz’s YouTube videos in the evening to keep me motivated and on track.

Getting rid of processed foods for good has been the best thing I have ever done for my health. I have never felt more clear in my mind and body.

A new study will test whether diets that closely resemble those consumed by First Nations people in pre-colonisation times can help drive type 2 diabetes remission in Indigenous people. Key points: Ketogenic diets call for fewer carbohydrates so that fats become the primary source of energy

Indigenous people of Australia

A study on how a traditional Indigenous diet based on ketogenic principles might reduce Type 2 diabetes will begin this year The study is being run by local Aboriginal elders, Flinders University and local health authorities The research, led by Ngarrindjeri elders in South Australia’s Coorong, along with Flinders University and the Riverland Mallee Coorong Local Health Network (RMCLHN) will use the ketogenic diet to boost health outcomes.

She said the typical diet of Ngarrindjeri people, which included hunted meat and fish and bush tucker such as saltbush, was typically low in carbohydrates and high in fats.

“It’s definitely worked in the past. I mean, look at how many thousands of years that we survived in the country. We didn’t need a research person to tell us it works,” she said.
