Interestingly, it’s far easier to find out what to eat on a keto diet than it is to understand what to drink, especially if you want variety. Keto Drinks: From Tasty Keto Coffee to Keto-Friendly Smoothies, Juices, and More, 100+ Recipes to Burn Fat, Increase Energy, and Boost Your Brainpower (2020, Adams Media) more than solves the dilemma.

Written by Faith Gorsky and Lara Clevenger, MSH, RDN, CPT, it presents a virtual rainbow of keto beverage options, complete with enough flavors, textures, and temperatures to ensure variety remains the spice of life, even while keto. Whether you’re interested in a wider selection of drinks or ideas for meal replacements while liquid fasting, you’ll find plenty of inspiration within Keto Drinks.

About the Authors

Faith Gorsky and Lara Clevenger, MSH, RDN, CPT, also known as “the Keto Queens,” are prolific writers of keto and low-carb cookbooks, with more than 10 print and digital guides to keto eating to their names. They also have a website, theketoqueens.com, where you can find meal plans, recipes, and more. Keto Drinks is a sister cookbook to their similarly laid-out cookbook for Keto Bread.

What’s Inside

This wonderland of low-carb drinks starts simple, explaining the basics of keto, ketosis, macronutrients, and the importance of minding what you drink on a keto diet, since many drinks are high in carbs.

From here, the book is broken into chapters featuring recipes, all of which include macros and tend to stay in a reasonable range, with net carbs hovering below 5 grams and just a few recipes reaching 8-9 net carbs.

Smoothies range from Blueberry Cheesecake to Chocolate Matcha with lots of green drinks to contrast what look and taste like drinkable desserts. (Salted Chocolate Macadamia or Piña Colada, anyone?)

Coffee creations, such as Blended Cashew Vanilla Coffee,  Buttered Hazelnut Espresso, Pumpkin Spice Latte and Blended Cinnamon Dulce Frap (you can try the latter here), make BPC (Bullet Proof Coffee) seem pedestrian.

Tea is similarly accessible and creative. Blended Chai, Caramel Rooibos, and Blueberry White Iced Tea are just a few options you’ll find within this robust section.

Juice is up next. If it’s hard to imagine what juices could be keto-friendly, you won’t have to guess here, though the authors use the term loosely. Less straight-up fresh-pressed deliciousness, these recipes tend to be a mixture of minimal sliced or blended fruit, sparkling water, and a variety of keto-friendly flavor enhancers. While the Cucumber Mint Refresher is exactly what you’d expect (cucumber, mint, water), Faux Red Sangria abounds with interesting flavors thanks to a bit of tart cherry juice, liquid stevia, 1 orange and 1 plum slice, and a few berries.

Countering the fresh, bright flavors of juice is the Milkshakes chapter, which beckons with interesting combinations like Caramel Cheesecake, Chocolate Almond Joy, Pistachio, and Vanilla Orange Cream.

Finally, there is the Broths section, which features around 20 types of bone broth, some of which are vibrantly seasoned (think Italian tomato and Herb Beef Bone Broth) and can easily make for a snack or light meal replacement.

What You’ll Learn

Along with recipes for drinks, you’ll find an outline of various ingredients worth using, ranging from various milks to sweeteners to thickeners to flavor enhancers. This insight is the entryway to understanding how to make up your own concoctions, staying deliciously keto all the while.

What We Like

This book opens the door to a much more diverse drink life on a keto diet. The concoctions on every page make it easy to enjoy satisfying non-alcoholic beverages (which could easily be made alcoholic if you add booze!) for breakfast, as a treat or pick-me-up, or even dessert.

Room for Improvement

Alas, there aren’t photos for every single drink in this book, so you’ll have to sometimes use your imagination when deciding what to expect. And while not a criticism, it’s worth noting that this is not a guide to cocktails so don’t expect any keto libations within Keto Drinks.

The Final Word

Keto Drinks is a helpful cookbook and guide for both specific, creative, totally tasty drink recipes and also learning the types of ingredients you can use to make your own delicious keto beverages. Whether you want fresh ideas for smoothies, coffee, or tea drinks, milkshakes, “juices” (beverages with hints of fresh fruit), or broths, you’ll find them—and much more—within this book.
