What is Analog Hole?

Definition

A perceived vulnerability in digital copy protection systems which can be exploited to duplicate copy-protected works using analog (human-perceptible) means, even if the work is protected against digital copy.

Real-World Examples

Illegal HDCP ripping devices that simulate a legitimate HDCP repeater. Pirates connect the HDMI output of a legitimate streaming service (e.g. a set-top-box by a service provider) to the ripping device, then play the contents and have it recorded protection-free.
